The Elephant at the Market

After a rather long week - Thursday was finally here and with it a little overdue Oz & Mr.S time at Newbury's newest addition.

The Rich Gypsy Blog The Elephant at the Market

No. 8 Market Place. Or rather awesomely called  The Elephant at the Market.

The new beast on the block and a beefy menu to boot.

We were a little late, parking on a Thursday - nightmare! Who would have thought. The staff were super friendly and we nabbed ourselves a little private booth for the evening

Which had the coolest lights strung above with rope woven in and out of the metal framework.

Mr. S spied it first

We always love a quirky light and this place has the whole selection.

The bar whisked us up some drinks.

Prosecco is £4.50 a glass complete with a little raspberry bobbing around - got my seal of approval (no raspberries in The Newbury, girls...)

The menu was very good and will definitely have the local spots quaking in their boots. Finally somewhere with an awesome range of steaks too!

I even spied the Elephant of steaks, a tasty 20 oz Chateaubriand on the menu which we said we'd try next visit (which I hope is rather soon!)

After catching up on our busy weeks we got stuck into this tear and share deal.

A rather delicious garlic sour dough, straight from the open wood fire oven (which has these awesome turquoise shiny tiles and sits on show for you to gawp at the pizzas bubbling away - wish I'd got a picture).

It was oozing garlic and was deliciously buttery - just something about the flavours, needless to say it was devoured in seconds!

We deliberated for ages over main courses, it was a tough call - but Mr.S eventually went for the ale battered fish with triple cooked chips, sweet mushy garden peas, rapeseed mayo & tartare sauce!

Once I got over the disappointment of not convincing Mr. S to share the Chateaubriand I settled on The Elephant at the Market burger; pulled beef short rib, sticky bacon & onion jam, seeded cream enriched bun, mustard & rapeseed mayonnaise, triple cooked chips.

It... was... unreal.

And we all know how much I love Byron and rarely does a non-Byron burger come up to scratch.

It was so tender and the onion jam- corrrr! It made it so sweet and tasty!

We didn't manage dessert sadly

Downton Abbey
but another quick glass of bubbles to finish up the eve was just what the doctor ordered.

We paid our bill, and snuck out the back via the garden terrace, which by the way will now make it super hard to choose where to have after work summer drinks!  Look at that converted shipping container, with the booths and heated lamps - so cool!

Excited to sample a little more from the fantastic menu, it is about time Newbury stepped up its restaurant game.

The Elephant has a Hoxton vibe to it and we were totally impressed. It's like a slice of London in leafy old Berkshire, finally!
