Gruesome red velvet cake

Halloween is fantastic for baking - a never ending supply of creative and creepy ideas!

Did you see my peanut butter spider cookies blog post?

I also had a go at a gruesome red velvet cake - complete with spooky eyes and mashed up bloody red buttercream frosting.

There are plenty of red velvet cake recipes online you can use.

I've never made a red velvet cake before and I'm probably going to have a few more attempts at perfecting this...

I split the mixture across two tins - going for a two-tiered halloween cake (ambitious)!

There was a little bit of a red tinge, but it did look a lot more like chocolate cake to me...

until I carefully sliced each in halves.

(Did you see the sneak peek on instagram?)

Once sliced up, it was a case of piecing back together and spreading some creamy filling between the layers. And then decorating (the fun part)!!

I wanted something gruesome and gory but without putting people off having a slice.

So I opted for edible eyes and plenty of heavily coloured buttercream icing...

I smeared the icing on quite roughly to give a raw, cut up effect... top with a little bit of edible gold glitter.

There we go!  A huge 6 layered slice of red velvet cake...

Not quite as red as I had hoped but it wasn't too bad for a first go.  I also got my plain and self-raising flours mixed up so was quite lucky it worked at all!

I made Mr. S have a test slice just in case, drizzled with chocolate sauce - it got the thumbs up and I was assured it tasted just fine.
