Party at thompson's

The Rich Gypsy: Dinner at thompsons

A kaleidoscopic carnival spilled through thompson's door to celebrate Aunty Lorraine's 50th birthday in true Gatsby fashion. With a golden roar we started the evening likes moths among the whisperings and the champagne and the stars...

Thompson's restaurant in Newport on the Isle of Wight was the chosen venue for this evenings celebrations. We splashed the bubbles around and prepared to get roaringly drunk.

After a few pre-drinks and waiting for everyone to arrive.

We all strolled upstairs to discover our table for the evening.

Check this out for a party.  Aunty Lorraine's Gatsby themed table decorations were incredible - all the small touches...the scene was set for the evening!

The Rich Gypsy: Dinner at thompsonsFabulous vases filled to the brim with beads and twinkly lights and tall luminous feathers!  And all the fabulously dressed guests ... felt like we had stepped back in time!

Chef Robert Thompson actually designed a bespoke three course menu especially for Aunty Lorraine's 50th party.  A real private dining treat - an experience to be savoured.

There wasn't just the three courses to be enjoyed - but plenty of amuse bouche courses to get the taste buds tantalised!

Bite sized parmesan choux buns served warm - literally melt in your mouth!

We kept the glasses topped up!

We were then presented with another tasty dish of delight...

Which was an especially tasty veloute with red mullet. I couldn't resist soaking up every last drop...

Before we knew it a flurry of white plates arrived with the first course.  A perfectly cooked vegetable topped camembert.

Almost too pretty to break into..

There was also a monkfish chowder and a partridge salad.

We toasted to an excellent first course and to Aunty Lorraine's fantastic decorations!

The Rich Gypsy: Dinner at thompsonsWhilst waiting for the mains I thought I'd sneak down to have a nosy at the open kitchen - and see Chef Robert Thompson himself in action. The Rich Gypsy: Dinner at thompsons

Plating up for a packed restaurant, whilst cooking up a storm for our rowdy Gatsby lot upstairs, no mean feat...

The bespoke menu was designed to cover all tastes - from the adventurous to the staple favourites in the family.

I went for the venison... served on a bed of salted kale and shallots...

Cooked to perfection, I think it might be the best venison I've ever had.

There was the rump perfectly barbequed - mushroom, tomato and chips (a people pleaser - and a special request)

The superb monkfish linguine - which Meg and Pete devoured, I was assured it was tasty - as I didn't even get a bite.

After a flurry of more prosecco, beers and whiskies a glorious pot of blackcurrant trifle arrived.

I'm not sure I remember the exact name but the layered flavours were fabulous! The evening was going very well...

We were all feeling very merry and having a roaringly good time

The staff were incredible and the service was faultless all night. They made it some how appear effortless which can only be because it is managed by a very professional team.
And then for the final plate.  Glazed Rum Baba.

The Rich Gypsy: Dinner at thompsonsSadly - I didn't capture the chocolate tortes, I took a spoonful of mine looked up and everyone had all but eaten them! A good sign, speaks for itself really. The main man himself - Chef Robert Thompson, popped up to say hello!

Sadly it was time to call it a night.  Having stayed well past closing time we waved the guys at thompson's off and stumbled out the door...

The Rich Gypsy: Dinner at thompsons

massive happy birthday to Aunty Lorraine and a huge thanks for all her hard work to make the party the most stylish yet!

And finally to thompson's.

We are already planning a return visit to try the tasting menu and I have no hesitation in recommending - do go try, you will not be disappointed - check out the website here.

Night old sport!
